Among the most annoying insects that can be found inside your home are the bed bugs. These small insects can live on several parts of your home such as on your floor, in between walls, luggage, furniture, clothes and most commonly, in your mattresses. You may even fail to notice their existence until you have found out the massive infestation on your home. Even though a bed bug infestation is not that noticeable, you should be aware of several symptoms that would indicate their presence and their potential damage to your property. Bed bugs can multiply rapidly so it is very important to prevent them from reproducing the moment you find out your home has one. This should be done as soon as possible since removing bed bugs can be difficult once the infestation worsens.
When finding a solution to your bed bug problem, the most common method that you can hear from most people is to use pesticides. During the past, many people utilize pesticides like DDT to eliminate bed bugs on their properties. Although this procedure is highly effective in killing the insects, there are also harmful effects to the health of humans as well as other animals on contact with these pesticides. Therefore, the use of these insect killers is not that advisable in killing bed bugs nowadays.
It is far wiser to use baited traps for bugs. Many of these can be made from readily available and relatively benign substances. For instance cockroaches can be readily eliminated by using a mixture of borax (boracic acid) and condensed milk, mixed into a paste and rolled into balls. These balls, placed in the back of cupboards wipe out cockroaches rapidly. Red top fly traps are also chemical free, they are just a bit smelly, so use them away from your house and this keeps the flies away! There is an increasing availability of organic pesticides. But just because something is labelled organic does not mean it is completely harmless. Many organic pesticides are toxic but they break down more readily and are not as damaging to the environment as the persistent chemicals they replace.
