Floating plastic paradise

We would all love our own slice of paradise, a private island we could call home. One man decided to build his own –  a floating island with plastic bottles! Take the tour…

Briton Richie Sowa quit his job, moved to Mexico and started picking up plastic PET bottles which became the base of his floating island paradise, Spiral Island. Apparently the island was built with 250,000 plastic bottles on which he secured plywood and bamboo before pouring sand on top. The 20 by 16 metre structure supported a two-story house, three beaches and mangroves planted to help keep the island cool.

The island was destroyed by Hurricane Emily in 2005 but undeterred, Richie built another island and started offering islands tours in August, 2008. Take a virtual tour by watching the video below…
